SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol that's used to connect to a web server and carry out various tasks using a command line. The protocol is employed by many expert users, as the information transmitted over it is encrypted, so it can't be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access could be employed for lots of things with regards to the type of website hosting account. With a shared hosting account, in particular, SSH is one of the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file if the hosting server allows it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH could be used for pretty much anything - you can install software or restart particular services like the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is employed typically with UNIX-like Platforms, but there are clients that allow you to use the protocol if your laptop or computer is using a different Operating System as well. The connection is established on TCP port 22 by default and the remote hosting server always listens for incoming connections on that port though many service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH access is featured with all web hosting services which we offer you. With some of them, it's featured as standard, while with others it's an optional upgrade that you can add with a few mouse clicks in your website hosting CP. You could get SSH access through the section dedicated to it where you can also find the info which you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You can pick the password that you'll use and, if needed, you shall be able to modify it with several clicks from the same location. All the commands which may be used with our shared plans are listed inside a help article alongside relevant examples. If the SSH access function is allowed for your account, you'll also be able to upload files using your favorite FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is offered by default with some of our semi-dedicated server plans, while with others you are able to include it from the hosting CP if required - even just for the current month. Either way, you can activate and de-activate the feature with just one click from the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same spot, you will find the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You will also find a box in which you can type the password you want to use, as it does not have to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you could also change it as often as you require. A full list of the commands that can be performed within a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, together with the syntax and a few instances. An extra function after SSH access is allowed will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client which supports this kind of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Web Hosting

If you order a new virtual private server from us, it shall come with full root access and you'll be able to connect to the server and to control everything using an SSH console. The function comes by default with all package deals, so you won't have to allow or upgrade anything. Your hosting server will be set up immediately after you get it and the moment you receive the Welcome email with the login info, you may connect through the server’s primary IP address and begin working. Because the VPS is a software emulation of a dedicated server and is separated from the other accounts on the physical machine, there will be no restrictions in terms of the commands that you can use. You'll have full root access, so that you can install and run any application that can work on a Linux machine, manage files, folders and databases or start/stop/reboot your entire machine or any software running on it.
